KETCHUM, Idaho ? Exeter native and 2008 U.S. Olympian Adam Craig scored a third-place finish Saturday in the elite men?s cross country race at the USA Cycling Mountain Bike Cross Country National Championships held at the Sun Valley Resort.
Craig, a two-time national champion in the event, trailed winner Todd Wells of Durango, Colo., by 2 minutes, 28 seconds.
Wells won his second straight national cross country title in a time of 1 hour, 44 minutes, 38 seconds. Sam Schultz of Missoula, Mont., finished a career-high second, 49 seconds behind Wells.
The third-place effort represented a solid finish for Craig, who had struggled earlier this season while competing on both the U.S. and International Cycling Union (UCI) circuits.
The Rabobank-Giant rider had showed signs of rounding into form during recent races, particularly last weekend when he finished 19th at the UCI World Cup tour stop in Windham Mountain, N.Y.
The 29-year-old Craig, a graduate of Dexter Regional High School, capped off his weekend Sunday by winning his sixth national title in the Super D, which is a shorter, more downhill cross country race that is considered less technical than traditional cross country racing and is focused more on speed.
Craig was timed in 19 minutes, 37 seconds, one second ahead of Giant Bicycles teammate and offseason rally-car partner Carl Decker of Bend, Ore.
Craig previously won Super D national titles in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008.
