One of the challenges we face is how to best design and change cities into smart intelligent and sustainable environments. Researchers will explain how new technology can make our cities more habitable, and help the people who live in them understand them better.

Researchers at the Centre for Spatial Analysis and Policy, University of Leeds, and the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis, University College London, have been developing a range of high-technology ways to see and think about the modern city. An exhibition in Leeds which forms part of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Festival of Social Science 2012 explains how cities are becoming 'smart' and demonstrates how tools, such as online mapping and modelling, are transforming the urban experience.

Mapping and modelling technologies of this kind can show how major disruptions to public transport affect traffic flow. Computer simulations can help to emulate vehicle movement patterns and help people to plan ways of avoiding the worst delays.

Amy O'Neill at the University of Leeds, organiser of the Smarter Cities exhibition, says: "Today's technology allows us to engage with people in real time. This means that it can be used to provide intelligence about cities, for example, through social media such as Twitter and Facebook. We have been combining data from traditional sources such as government and commercial surveys, data that has been captured from buildings and vehicles using sensor devices, personal data, for example from tweets, and data which has been volunteered by the public, for example on traffic movements."

The exhibition will allow people to engage with the possibilities that this creates. There are now an increasing number of ways of getting real-time information on the cities we live in, often via Smartphone applications. Many of these applications involve engaging with your friends in real time and in new ways. The existence of this data and the innovative ways it can be visualised and used, means that cities are becoming smarter. One of our exhibits, for example, will showcase how the study of twitter data provides us with powerful conclusions about movement and activity patterns in our cities.

Another of the exhibits will be 'Pigeon Sim', a computer model adapted from video gaming. This allows the user to 'fly' across the cityscape, using games controllers to direct their flight and seeing the view on a near-immersive big screen. Amy says: "This is a technology that enhances our perception of the urban environment and is especially good for engaging young people." Pigeon Sim does not use recordings. Instead it is fed by real-time data on anything from water levels in rivers to traffic jams or air pollution.

Amy concludes: "The emphasis will be on exhibits that people can use, not just look at. There will be a lot of hand-held devices that can help people imagine how they might use these resources in their own lives. This technology is also useful for local government, businesses, researchers and other professional stake holders".

Mixed ruling for MIT blackjack player from '21' | wishtv.com

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? An appeals court issued a mixed ruling for one member of the MIT Blackjack Team portrayed in the movie "21," raising questions on how casinos deal with suspected "advantage gamblers" and when their bans are lifted.

The ruling issued Tuesday by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals involves professional gambler Laurie Tsao, whom Caesars Entertainment casino personnel identified as an advantage gambler and escorted out five times with warnings that she'd been trespassing.

But the company sent her targeted offers for free rooms, including one inviting her to spend time in Las Vegas for the NCAA basketball tournament, leading her back to Caesars Palace and to an arrest on the casino floor in 2008.

The appeals panel upheld a lower court ruling, which dismissed Tsao's claims that a Las Vegas officer falsely arrested and defamed her, and that her constitutional rights were violated by the officer and the casino. But the appeals court reversed a ruling that dismissed similar false arrest and defamation claims against Caesars, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal (http://bit.ly/S4en3A ).

Nevada state law allows casinos to ask suspected card counters to leave with a warning on the first offense. Refusing to leave or returning to the casino is a possible misdemeanor.

But the ruling raised the question of when those trespassing restrictions are lifted, especially in light of the special invitations Tsao was receiving from the company even after she'd been kicked out.

"It could be pertinent ? depending on what Nevada law concerning consent to trespass turns out to be ? whether (Caesars) anticipated that those potential customers invited to stay at its hotel or bet on basketball would gamble in its casino," the court wrote.

Tsao's lawsuit stems from her arrest early on the morning of March 19, 2008, after three security officials approached her at a table and asked her for identification. When she said she had none, she was handcuffed and taken to a holding room even after asking to leave.

She was held there until a police officer arrived and determined her identity through a long process that involved identifying her car in the parking lot with a key fob she had.

Tsao was booked at Clark County jail on suspicion of trespass and providing false information to an officer, but prosecutors later dropped the charges. She then filed a civil complaint against Caesars and the police officer.

Letter: Scott Brown's Health Care Policy Harmful for Winchester ...

According to the 2010 Census, 3,460 people age 65 and older live in Winchester, and every one of them should be deeply concerned about Republican Scott Brown?s health care policy.? The centerpiece of Brown?s health care policy is working to repeal the Affordable Care Act, the federal health care reform law known as ObamaCare.

National health care advocacy organization Community Catalyst Action Fund released a new analysis finding that, if the Affordable Care Act (?ObamaCare?) is repealed, senior citizens in Winchester and across Massachusetts will be saddled with higher costs and fewer benefits.

ObamaCare, as it is known, lowers seniors? Medicare premiums and out-of-pocket costs by an estimated $500 per year.? This means that, if Republican Scott Brown gets his way and repeals ObamaCare, seniors? Medicare costs will go up about $5,000 over the next decade.

ObamaCare also fills in the so-called ?donut hole? in prescription drug coverage for seniors.? Between January and August of this year, 31,000 Massachusetts residents hit the ?donut hole.?? ObamaCare saved those Medicare beneficiaries an average of over $600 per person.? This means that, if Republican Scott Brown gets his way and repeals ObamaCare, seniors? prescription drug costs will go up dramatically.

Also, during the first eight months of 2012, over 500,000 Medicare beneficiaries across Massachusetts took advantage of no-cost preventive services thanks to ObamaCare.? If Republican Scott Brown gets his way and repeals ObamaCare, seniors will lose these no-cost preventive services.

Policy decisions made in Washington D.C. have a real and direct impact on the residents of Winchester.? The health care policy that Republican Scott Brown is advocating would have a decidedly harmful impact on Winchester's seniors.

The Care and Feeding (and Promotion!) of Authors ? ? Books ...

Have you read and enjoyed a book lately that was written by an author who is still living? You should tell that author how much you enjoyed the book, because we all love to hear from readers who have not only read but have also appreciated our writing. Really! We do! After all, who doesn?t like flattery? (And this holds true for any creator, but I?m zeroing in on authors at the moment, because I am one.)

While we do love the flattery, you should also consider going one step further, and recommend what you?ve read to other readers ? especially friends who may never have otherwise known about this book you?ve enjoyed. You can do this by ?liking? and posting a review to Amazon, Indigo, Kobo, Goodreads or Independent Bookstore websites, or wherever the book is listed for sale. Also, by sending out an email to your contact list, and generally broadcasting the information at your place of work or in real-life social settings, you?ll get the word out even further.

If you belong to a book club, encourage your group to read and discuss the book ? and to buy multiple copies of it, rather than just circulate one among all members(!!!). Consider asking the author to speak to your reading group. Many authors LOVE speaking to book clubs! Some even enjoy doing so via Skype?

Attend public readings by this author ? especially if the author happens to live in your own community. Take friends with you, so they have a chance to meet the author, as well.

But you could do even more for this author and their book by sharing the information on social media ? Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, or many other sites ? whatever you use most often. Give that author a plug! Encourage your friends and followers to buy and read the eBook or print copy, or to borrow either from the library. (If your local library does not currently circulate copies, make a request that they consider buying the book for their collection ? especially if the author is local.)

Then encourage those friends to do the same and to share the information about the book and author among their friends and followers, if they also have enjoyed the book.

Subscribe to the author?s blog or website. Read their updates and share that information with your friends. Encourage those friends to subscribe. Make comments on the author?s blog posts. Let them know you are out there reading and that you still appreciate their writing. Like and share interesting blogposts the author has written on social media, as per above.

If that author has written and published more than one book or eBook, buy (or borrow from the library) and read everything. Support their entire list of books!

Consider buying multiple copies of the book or eBook to give as gifts for holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, and other celebrations. Receiving a book as a gift is always appreciated (at least, it?s appreciated by most of the people I know?), but giving a book that you yourself have read, enjoyed, and now endorse is the best gift of all! And, if you?ve already written to the author and told them how much you enjoyed their book, as per above suggestion, I?m sure that author will not mind signing and personalizing those gifts for you.

If you follow my suggestions, any author?s life will be made that much easier, because you will be helping them to promote their writing. Which in turn will keep them writing. And with the success of this book after building a larger readership, the author will continue to publish, and you will have more books written by your favourite author to read and enjoy and to share with your friends.

Truly, authors cannot ask for a better response from their readers! Please consider adopting an author and assisting in their care, feeding and promotion. We authors will all thank you very much!

Oh, and one more thing ? please like, share, and comment upon this blog post! Let?s try to encourage all readers to do the same for the authors they love! Think of it as karma for books and writing.

New target for cancer research uncovered

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? In a new paper released October 24 in Nature, BioFrontiers Institute scientists at the University of Colorado Boulder, Tom Cech and Leslie Leinwand, detailed a new target for anti-cancer drug development that is sitting at the ends of our DNA.

Researchers in the two scientists' laboratories collaborated to find a patch of amino acids that, if blocked by a drug docked onto the chromosome end at this location, may prevent cancerous cells from reproducing. The amino acids at this site are called the "TEL patch" and once modified, the end of the chromosome is unable to recruit the telomerase enzyme, which is necessary for growth of many cancerous cells.

"This is an exciting scientific discovery that gives us a new way of looking at the problem of cancer," Cech said. "What is amazing is that changing a single amino acid in the TEL patch stops the growth of telomeres. We are a long way from a drug solution for cancer, but this discovery gives us a different, and hopefully more effective, target."

Cech is the director of the BioFrontiers Institute, a Howard Hughes Medical Investigator and winner of the 1989 Nobel Prize in chemistry.

Co-authors on the study include postdoctoral fellows Jayakrishnan Nandakumar and Ina Weidenfeld; University of Colorado undergraduate student Caitlin Bell; and Howard Hughes Medical Institute Senior Scientist Arthur Zaug.

Telomeres have been studied since the 1970s for their role in cancer. They are constructed of repetitive nucleotide sequences that sit at the ends of our chromosomes like the ribbon tails on a bow. This extra material protects the ends of the chromosomes from deteriorating, or fusing with neighboring chromosome ends. Telomeres are consumed during cell division and, over time, will become shorter and provide less cover for the chromosomes they are protecting. An enzyme called telomerase replenishes telomeres throughout their lifecycles.

Telomerase is the enzyme that keeps cells young. From stem cells to germ cells, telomerase helps cells continue to live and multiply. Too little telomerase produces diseases of bone marrow, lungs and skin. Too much telomerase results in cells that over proliferate and may become "immortal." As these immortal cells continue to divide and replenish, they build cancerous tumors. Scientists estimate that telomerase activation is a contributor in up to 90 percent of human cancers.

To date, development of cancer therapies has focused on limiting the enzymatic action of telomerase to slow the growth of cancerous cells. With their latest discovery, Cech and Leinwand envision a cancer drug that would lock into the TEL patch at chromosome ends to keep telomerase from binding there. This approach of inhibiting the docking of telomerase may be the elegant solution to the complex problem of cancerous cells. Cech, a biochemist, and Leinwand, a biologist, joined forces to work on their latest solution.

"This work was really made possible by the fact that our labs are so close," Leinwand said. "My lab was able to provide the cell biology and understanding of genetics, and Tom's lab allowed us to explore the biochemistry. We have a unique situation at BioFrontiers where labs and people comingle to make discoveries just like this."

Leinwand is the chief scientific officer of the BioFrontiers Institute and a professor of molecular, cellular and developmental biology.

24 October 2012?Researchers in the United Kingdom and China have made a microchip capable of emitting laser beams with a peculiar property known as orbital angular momentum (OAM).

Today?s optical-fiber communication systems use different wavelengths of laser light to squeeze multiple channels of data through the same ?light pipe? simultaneously, offering much speedier data transfer rates. But taking advantage of photons with orbital?sometimes called ?twisted? or ?corkscrew??angular momentum is a less-studied way to encode data channels in light. Each wavelength, for example, could carry different values of orbital angular momentum. ?It?s another dimension,? says Siyuan Yu, a researcher at the University of Bristol, in England, who notes that twisted light has an infinite number of states. ?OAM appears to be the last parameter of light that we haven?t explored so much,? observes Yu, who is part of the team that created the orbital angular momentum beam emitter.

While researchers have been aware of OAM as a physical property of photons for quite some time, it was only in the 1990s that they figured out the first ways of manipulating it. Even then OAM use was confined to physics experiments. But by the mid-2000s, the wider scientific community started to think about twisted light for communications.

The importance of the advance?reported last week in Science by Yu and collaborators at the University of Glasgow, Fudan University, and Sun Yat-sen University?becomes clear when it is compared with separate research reported earlier this year. A device for multiplexing and demultiplexing twisted light beams was reported in a paper presented in March at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition,?in Los Angeles. And in June, a team of researchers at the University of Southern California (USC) reported in Nature Photonics that they had used OAM to transfer data at 2.5 terabits per second over a distance of a about a meter. ?

Making twisted light requires shifting a laser?s phase in a particular way, says Yu. The multiplexer described at the March conference accomplished this with multiple waveguides carved onto a chip; the new device created by Yu?s group requires only one waveguide. This improvement allowed the researchers to shrink the emitter, which is made from CMOS-compatible silicon photonic integrated circuits, by several orders of magnitude.

Yu and company also created integrated arrays that can emit multiple optical vortices. According to Alan Willner, a member of the USC team, creating a hundred beams using the kind of devices from his group?s terabit demonstration would call for ?a large number of expensive, discrete spatial light modulators.?

The improvements reported in the Science paper this week should be welcome news to companies such as Intel and Luxtera, which have been racing to find ways to replace the expensive exotic semiconductors and separate components in most optical communications systems with cheap integrated chips made of silicon.

According to Yu, twisted light arrays could someday allow communication channels between chips in a computer. Another potential application the University of Bristol researcher foresees is an imaging tool that makes it possible to ?shine a light? to see the difference in chirality?left- or right-handedness?in molecules.

For the moment, emission efficiency, the optical power coming out of a waveguide compared with that going in, ranges between 3 and 13 percent. But Yu thinks it can be pushed well past 50 percent. USC?s Willner concurs, saying that the British and Asian researchers could greatly improve the twisted beam emitter with some clever engineering. Key to that will be improving the design of the coupling between the waveguide and another component, something Yu and company are confident they can accomplish.

Music Lessons Teach Valuable Life Lessons | arts and entertainment

It is not surprising that parents who encourage their children to take up music lessons expect that the latter will eventually end up as singers, instrumentalists or in other words, musical performers who do both or any of those two things. Yet even though these children do not fulfil their parents' expectation, it does not necessarily mean that they are a disappointment. These children after all learn valuable and not to mention sensible lessons from the sessions they attended. Those things will see them through life and its every challenge.

For one, the kids learn the importance of discipline early on during the course of them taking Guitar lessons for example. Just as they learn to play musical instruments, these students, at the same time, acknowledge the need to practice and sharpen their skills in order to perform better. Also, as students, these kids likewise learn how to recover from their mistakes while they seek to find the smooth transition from failure to success. This likewise translates to mean that a student has what it takes to persevere amidst hard times as he or she strives to accomplish something no matter what.

And as if those are not enough, a class like this likewise provides the venue for the students to improve the way they relate with other people. They learn about the concept of cooperation and experience how it's like to work with one another towards a common goal. From applying what they learn by means of providing an accompaniment to a song, they later on make considerable contributions to the world they were born to.

At this point, it is already very obvious that music lessons train and mould a student not only in all things music but practically, in most things about life as well. A student takes home with him and her useful and universally applicable learning that is significant throughout his or her life. His or her gains clearly goes beyond mastering how to sing a song or play an instrument pretty well.

All of the things which a person acquires by means of taking up music lessons are instrumental in living his or her life in a manner which allows, encourages and dares him or her to realise his or her fullest potential possible. Regardless of whether a student chooses to eventually pursue a musical career or not, it's for certain that he or she will find that the learning gained is that which sees him or her through this life in general. And with such significant edge, this person really has what it takes to rise above the challenges that come his or her way.

Stock Talk: Why Google's Q3 earnings aren't nearly as bad as you might think

    Google

On Thursday, Google faced the embarrassing situation of seeing its Q3 financial results released prematurely. The stock tanked on the results, and Google asked to have trading stopped temporarily. I’ve already seen one story suggesting that the early release “wiped out $20 billion in valuation.”

But let’s get real. The loss has nothing to do with the accidental release. It was someone else’s mistake, not Google's, and anyone on Wall Street knows that the real reason Google was trading down was the quarterly miss.

    More: Google's complete Q3 2012 earnings

Stocks -- or, more accurately, investors -- always react to quarterly results. Analysts keep detailed models of their expectations, and the average of these models is known as the “consensus estimate.”  If you miss consensus, as Google dod, you get punished. It really means nothing in the long term, but it gives financial media types something to get excited about for a few days.

So, Google did something the pros call “shitting the bed.” The most important headline number is earnings per share, where Google came in at $9.03 (adjusted) versus the consensus estimate of $10.65. Big miss.

Study shows overeating impairs brain insulin function, can lead to diabetes and obesity

Study shows overeating impairs brain insulin function, can lead to diabetes and obesity

    Thursday, October 18, 2012

New research from Mount Sinai School of Medicine sheds light on how overeating can cause a malfunction in brain insulin signaling, and lead to obesity and diabetes. Christoph Buettner, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Medicine (Endocrinology, Diabetes and Bone Disease) and his research team found that overeating impairs the ability of brain insulin to suppress the breakdown of fat in adipose tissue.

In previous research Dr. Buettner's team established that brain insulin is what suppresses lipolysis, a process during which triglycerides in fat tissue are broken down and fatty acids are released. When lipolysis is unrestrained, fatty acid levels are elevated, which can initiate and worsen obesity and type 2 diabetes. The current study is published online in The Journal of Biological Chemistry. The first study was published in the February 2, 2011 issue of Cell Metabolism.

"We are interested in understanding why people who eat too much eventually develop diabetes. Our recent studies suggest that once you overeat, your brain develops insulin resistance. Since brain insulin controls lipolysis in adipose tissue by reducing sympathetic nervous system outflow to adipose tissue, brain insulin resistance causes increased spillage of fatty acids from adipose tissue into the blood stream," said Dr. Buettner.

Increased fatty acids induce inflammation and that, in turn, can further worsen insulin resistance, which is the core defect in type 2 diabetes. Fatty acids also increase glucose production in the liver which raises blood glucose levels, Dr. Buettner explained. "It's a vicious cycle and while we knew that this can begin with overeating, this study shows that it is really the brain that is harmed first which then starts the downward spiral."

In this study, researchers fed rats a high-fat diet comprised of 10 percent lard for three consecutive days. This increased their daily caloric intake by up to 50 percent compared to the control rats that were fed a regular low fat diet. The researchers then infused a tiny amount of insulin into the brains of both groups of rats that they had shown in earlier studies to suppress release of glucose from the liver and fatty acids from fat tissue. They found that overeating impaired the ability of brain insulin to suppress glucose release from the liver and lipolysis in fat tissue. Similarly, short-term overeating in humans is known to produce comparable insulin resistance which could be explained by brain insulin resistance.

"When you overeat, your brain becomes unresponsive to these important clues such as insulin, which puts you on the road to diabetes. We believe that what happens in rats also happens in humans" said Dr. Buettner.

Dr. Buettner's team plans to investigate methods of improving brain insulin function that could restrain lipolysis and improve insulin resistance.

Second man arrested in plot to bomb US Federal Reserve: NYT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. authorities said a man arrested in San Diego on child pornography charges was linked to a plot by a Bangladeshi man to set off a bomb at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the New York Times reported.

The newspaper said Howard Willie Carter II was suspected of being an accomplice to Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis, 21, a Bangladeshi who was arrested in New York on Wednesday in a sting operation.

Nafis faces charges of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and attempting to provide material support to al Qaeda, the U.S. Department of Justice said in a statement. If convicted, he faces life in prison.

The FBI said the public was not in danger because the 1,000-pound (450-kg) bomb provided to Nafis for his planned attack on Wednesday was not in working condition and the suspect was closely monitored by an undercover agent.

The Times said Carter was arrested after the FBI found 1,000 images of child pornography on a computer that was traced back to him in August. The computer also had emails addressed to "Yaqeen," a name authorities said Carter used in communicating with Nafis.

In conversations with undercover officials, Nafis mentioned Yaqeen as a conspirator and said he also had suggested a military base near Baltimore to attack, the Times said.

Nafis allegedly considered several targets for his attack, including the New York Stock Exchange and a high-ranking government official, who a U.S. official identified as President Barack Obama.
