Old Fashioned Networking for Business | businessfirstonline

says Carlo Pandian

There?s a lot of buzz around the internet these days for marketing and growing your business.? The computing revolution of the last twenty years has indeed made running your own business much easier than before and certainly made managing a business more efficient and simple.

The internet also offers a whole range of opportunities to market your firm through social networking, but oddly one site Meetup.com has taken a rather unusual angle on the social networking trend.? With Meet Up you actually get to meet your friends and make new ones.? If this sounds like a one of those sites it?s not, and it?s actually a great take on the social networking phenomena.

What is Meet Up?

Meet Up allows you to create or join groups.? Simple as that really; however these groups are not restricted to the virtual world and, in fact, only use the virtual world to manage the groups.? The meetings themselves are firmly located in the real world.? Groups are focussed on just about every interest and pursuit that you can imagine, from macram? to mountaineering, and the site really just operates as a central point of contact for people to locate groups in their area and then join in with the fun.

But is it just for hobbies?

Meet Up is very keenly focussed on ?hobbies? but that doesn?t mean that it?s only for this purpose.? You can set up and run just about any group you wish; this could be a marketing seminar, or any talk relevant to your industry.? Generally, it?s not effective to set up a sales type show, but works best when creating events that are likely to be of interest to your target demographic.

By finding groups that are relevant to your products in your area you can join up and set up a talk, event or simply a summer barbeque!? This type of event gives you the chance to ?market by stealth? but the hard sell variety will be a big turn off to the groups? users, so tread softly.

Meet Up Tools

There are simple tools on the Meet Up site which allow you to create lists of attendees, print name badges, send email reminders and create an RSPV system to help you manage the event smoothly.? The site offers you, effectively, the ability to access an events management team, without the need to actually hire one.? While it may be useful to hire event managers for larger, corporate events, this type of site allows you to hold less formal talks, seminars and events.

Target Groups

Depending on the industry you are in there may already be a Meet Up group to match in your area.? If this is the case then it?s worth joining and setting up an event that will interest users.? You can focus your efforts on targeting either potential customers or setting up a more B2B type session.? Both have advantages to grow your client base, with the former being the most obvious type to grow new business.? Corporate and B2B events should not, however, be discounted.

These can help to raise your profile with other local businesses, and can be especially useful if you target firms who operate in similar, but not the same, fields as your own firm.? This can create a number of opportunities for referrals and partnership working, which in the current economic climate are excellent ways to keep a healthy order book.

Old Tricks and New Technology

It?s strange, perhaps, that in the era of online social networking, that this type of site should have been created.? However, it just goes to show, that whatever the internet is, it?s no substitute for good old fashioned networking!

By Radar Staff

Avalanna Routh, who got to hang out with her hero Justin Bieber last Valentine?s Day after launching a Facebook campaign to meet him, passed away Wednesday morning, RadarOnline.com is reporting.

Avalanna, 6, had suffered from a super rare form of brain cancer called ATRT since she was a baby, a condition that only affects about 30 people a year.

In February Avalanna?s dreams came true when she spent the day with the Biebs in New York. She started an online crusade to meet the 18-year-old singer and quickly amassed more than 12,000 followers in her quest.?

When Bieber heard about Avalanna?s wish he re-Tweeted the Facebook link to his millions of Twitter fans and invited her and her family to spend the day with him in Manhattan.

Avalanna, who went by the Twitter name ?MrsBieber,? played board games with the teen heart throb, kissed him on the cheek and was even allowed to mess up his famous locks.

Bieber posted a picture of himself planting a smacker on Avalanna?s cheek and afterwards Tweeted: "That was one of the best things I have ever done. She was AWESOME. Feeling really inspired right now!?

He also brought her on stage with him in June at the Apollo Theatre in NYC and staff at the Boston hospital where she was being treated organized a pretend wedding to him.

Hours after the news of Avalanna?s death broke Bieber Tweeted: ?Just got the worst news ever. One of the greatest spirits i have ever known is gone. Please pray for her family and for her,? and then: ?RIP Avalanna. i love you.?

Avalanna, from Merrimac in Massachusetts, was still Tweeting her love for Bieber just as recently as September 13.

She said: "@justinbieber Trying to stay up late to see my husband on Americas Got Talent #supportingmyman #mrsbieber"

Avalanna?s parents announced the sad news of her death on her Twitter page?she had more than 150,000 followers.

They posted: ?Our darling Avalanna went to Heaven this morning. Oh Avalanna, the brightest star - you took our hearts with you, our greatest Love.?

Toddler Safe At Home After Amber Alert ? CBS Dallas / Fort Worth

GARLAND (CBS 11 NEWS) ? Two-year-old Maliyah Vergenz is too busy being adorable?alternately hiding her face against her father?s shoulder or blowing kisses?to realize that she was ever in danger.? But, the Garland toddler, now safe at home, was the subject of a North Texas Amber Alert on Tuesday, after she disappeared with the family?s live-in babysitter.

Patricia Garcia, 38, has been charged with kidnapping and is being held on a $50,000 bond.

?I called the babysitter to see if I could pick up my daughter,? says Maliyah?s father, Anthony Vergenz.? ?She pretty much said the only way I?d get my daughter back was to call Garland Police Department.? That right there threw up a red flag.?

What Vergenz didn?t know at that time, was that earlier in the day, Garcia phoned police to accuse the couple of selling drugs.

?We?re still doing an investigation,? says Garland Police spokesperson, Ofc. Joe Harn.? ?We don?t know if the drugs were placed there.? What is an interesting fact to us is that we get a call about drugs being there in the home, turn them over to us, and soon after that, she leaves with the baby and does not return.?

For several hours, investigators say they communicated with Garcia.? They say she agreed to meet at local motel to return the child.? When that appointed time came and passed, police issued an Amber Alert.

Garland investigators are crediting an eagle-eyed Terrell officer for spotting the suspect?s car and taking her into custody shortly after 11:00 Tuesday night.? Maliyah was found safe in the hotel room and returned to her worried parents.

?Should I have done a background check or something on her? Yes. I should have,? says Vergenz.? ?But that?s a lesson learned. I just thought that going through church, knowing this person, and it?s been almost two years we?ve known her. ?

Maliyah?s mom, Cassandra Williams, says she considered Garcia a trusted friend.? She now feels both compassion and anger for the woman, who claimed to have recently miscarried.

?I feel real betrayed,? says Williams, her voice breaking. ?I feel like I can?t trust anybody anymore.?

Facebook stops asking you to snitch on your friends

5 hrs.

Earlier this week, the Internet had a mini meltdown over false reports that Facebook may?ve posted users' old?private messages.

Though it was swiftly deemed untrue,?even the French government demanded answers on this non-scandal. All of that overshadowed the real news, a creepy misstep of which the world?s largest social network really?is guilty: asking Facebook users to identify friends who may be using fake names on the site.

?Help Us Make Facebook Better,? read a survey prompt that kicked up a comparatively minor amount of ire when it made the rounds on Twitter. ?Is this your friend?s real name?? the survey went on, showing a photo of one of the recipient?s Facebook friends and multiple choice answers, ?Yes,? ?No,? ?I don?t know this person,? and ?I don?t want to answer.?

?Your response is anonymous and won?t affect your friend?s account,? Facebook assured on the poll question, which Facebook representive?Fred Wolens reiterated to NBCNews.com.?

Though Facebook does have a real name policy, Wolens said this particular poll was one of many anonymous surveys Facebook uses to tweak its algorithms. He provided the following company statement:?

This was a limited survey we have already concluded. We are always looking to gauge how people use Facebook and represent themselves to better design our product and systems. We analysed these surveys only using aggregate data and responses had zero impact on any user's account.

According to Wolens, the survey was received by a small amount of users. Exactly how small, he wouldn?t say. News of it?spread when?Twitter user @chapeaudefee tweeted a screenshot and the comment, ?Facebook wants to know if your friends? names are real. Are you going to be the snitch??

Outraged? Probably. You know how you love to be outraged at Facebook. Shocked? Not so much.?

The Internet is currently so unperturbed by this latest turn, YouTube has yet to produce a single ?Hitler reacts to Facebook asking you to snitch on your friends? video ? though a long history of totalitarian regimes asking its citizens to turn on their neighbors is not lost on those who are offended by the poll, despite its reassurances.

?The whole idea of snitching is highly dodgy,? writes privacy blogger Paul Bernal.??It?s creepy ? and it helps build at atmosphere of distrust, breaking down the very things that make social networks good,? he continues. ?The social relationships that are the heart of Facebook are meant to do ?good? things ??not be a route by which bad things are spread.?

Exotic Pet Dangers In Topock

Does your child have an unusual pet? Many Topock parents have bypassed cats and dogs for pets that don?t leave hair, urine, or vomit on the carpet. Ease of care, however, is not always a wise trade-off. Topock parents should be aware of the multiple health and safety risks associated with reptiles, rodents, ferrets, primates, and even fish.

The following list of pets and the possible dangers reads like a script for a horror movie:

Fish: infections that can cause lung disease, skin infections, and leprosy
Hamsters: a virus that causes irreversible nerve damage
Hedgehogs: salmonella, yersinia pseudotuberculosis, rabies, and fungal infections
Iguanas, lizards, snakes: salmonella (the animals themselves can tolerate levels of salmonella far greater than humans)
Monkeys and other primates: herpes B (can cause meningitis in humans), tuberculosis, serious injury
Ferrets: these fierce critters with razor-sharp teeth have maimed many children
Prairie dogs: tuleremia (often fatal infection)
African Gambian rats: monkeypox (smallpox-related disease)

The foregoing information was taken from an excellent U.S. News article which can be found at http://health.usnews.com/health-news/blogs/on-parenting/2008/10/06/8-pets-that-pose-major-health-threats-to-kids

With proper hygiene and safety precautions these pets may not cause problems, but it is important to understand the possible dangers. Consult an expert for comprehensive instructions on caring for any traditional or non-traditional pet.

Microsoft finds malware preloaded on new computers

2 hrs.

When Microsoft's cybercrime researchers went searching for counterfeit versions of their Windows software in China, they stumbled across an entirely different form of illegal activity: Malware installed on computers before they were even out of the box.

Of the 20 computers that Microsoft's researchers purchased in?China, all of them ran a?bootleg?version of Windows and four of them were infected with a serious piece of malware called Nitol.

In?court filings?released on Thursday, Microsoft said a company called Hedy made the infected computer, and sued the Chinese businessman thought to be behind the company.

When Nitol infects a machine, that computer becomes one of many controlled by a remote server in what's known as a?botnet. Botnets use their strength in numbers to attack websites, steal information and commit thievery without the owner ever becoming the wiser.

In the court records,?Microsoft?described the practice of using pirated software, common among lower-tier computer manufacturers in China, as a perfect opportunity for cybercriminals to infect new machines.

The counterfeit programs cut manufacturers' costs, but often come preloaded with viruses or Trojans. Customers don't stand a chance.

The U.S. district court for the Eastern District of Virginia gave Microsoft the right to temporarily take control of the botnet's domain, 3322.org, a Chinese DDNS provider that Microsoft calls the single-largest home to malicious software on the Web.

Microsoft said it found "a staggering 500 different strains of malware hosted on more than 70,000 subdomains" on the site, from which attacks have been launched in the past.

Microsoft said most interactions between the United States and 3322.org are malicious.

This isn't the first time Microsoft has gone after cybercriminals. In an effort to protect its own brand's reputation, the Redmond, Wash., software developer has targeted major botnets called Waledac, Kelihos, ZeuS and Rustock, security journalist?Brian Krebs wrote.

Despite Microsoft's efforts, taking out one domain at a time may be like playing Whack-a-mole. Gunter Ollman, security company Damballa's vice president of research, said it's very possible that the malware will take instructions from another DDNS provider that hasn't been disrupted.

Nintendo unveils 'Nintendo TVii' for Wii U

Nintendo showed off some of the Wii U's new television functionality during its New York City press event -- first unveiled during E3 2012 -- including DVR and TiVO, and search across several content providers (Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant, and cable television, to name a few). It's unclear whether the DVR functionality is built into the console or not, but we'll be sure to find out as soon as possible*. Nintendo's director of strategic partnership Zach Fountain's calling the service a "personalized program guide" and he showed off how you'll be able to interact with content -- movies and television shows can be searched via text entry, or explored in a general category sense (movies, tv, sports, etc.). If QWERTY text isn't your kind of thing, a rotary entry in the lower right corner offers another way to seek out content.

The service is only for US and Canadian Wii U owners for now, but Fils-Aime said the company's exploring an expansion into other parts of the Americas. Nintendo TVii is free with the purchase of a console this November. Click on past the break for the company's brief video demo.

Update*: DVR/TiVO functionality is not built into the hardware, we confirmed.

The Influences Over Exchange Rates | Financial World International

Currency exchange rates influence domestic prices on all imported items a consumer can buy. While individuals have little influence over those exchange rates, a solid understanding of the three basic elements that determine foreign currency rates can save buyers significant amounts at cash registers.

Definition

Exchange rates are, in essence, how much of one country?s currency it will take to purchase another country?s currency. Each currency exchange rate is always noted in comparison to another country?s, and that comparison is known as a currency pair.

For example, the United States dollar is scripted as USD. The Australian dollar is noted as AUD. The pairing of the USD against the AUD is written as USD/AUD with a ratio, such as 1:1.23. This ratio means it costs one US dollar to purchase 1.23 Australian dollars. If written in opposite format, AUD/USD 1.23:1, it would cost 1.23 Australian dollar to purchase a single United States dollar.

Relative Value

Each currency pair is different, and one rating against a currency does not automatically influence the original currency?s exchange rate to a third country?s exchange rate. US-to-Japan might be USD/JPY 1.87:1, but Japan to the euro, JPY/EUR, might be 1:1.47.

Influences Over Exchange Rates

There are three primary influences over currency rates, and each factor might have additional sub-categories that have either broad or narrow applications.

The first influence is a country?s political climate. If there is unrest in a country or in a region, expect a change in a country?s currency value. Such things as riots or a high number of demonstrations. The political climate that is calm and optimistic increases a currency relative value against another?s.

The second influence is the national economy. If prices are low, foreign trade is advantageous and unemployment is low, the economic environment promotes low inflation and a high currency value.

The third primary factor in currency rates involves the trading environment or market impression. Foreign exchange trading activity either feeds or starves an exchange rate. The national central banks may determine a daily starting rate for that country?s exchange rate, but the currency traders determine the validity of that price: If the starting rate is not in fair accordance with the impression traders have, the price of that currency will fall: It?s not as valuable in trading as the currency of another country. It will take more of that bad-impressioned country?s money to buy foreign goods or foreign currency.

Because the import costs increase, consumers within that country usually find prices for those items increasing. Sometimes, the price differential is high enough that the importing country releases more currency into circulation to provide money to pay for those imported goods. When a nation?s currency exchange rate is high against the exporting country, expect prices to rise, perhaps prompting a domestic product purchase instead.

Hope for peace in Colombia, despite obstacles

Talks between Colombia's government and the FARC guerrillas are official, and there are reasons for optimism.

It is official now. For the fourth time in 30 years, and the first time in 10 years, the government of Colombia and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerrilla group have launched a negotiation that will attempt to end Latin America?s longest armed conflict.

On September 4, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos?confirmed?that, after more than 6 months of exploratory talks in Havana, Cuba, the government and guerrillas had agreed on a framework for more formal negotiations. These negotiations will begin during the first half of October (most likely the 8th) in Oslo, Norway, and move later to Havana.

FARC representatives, meeting in Havana,?confirmed?the same information and insisted that they would not get up from the table until a peace agreement is reached. On the 5th and 6th, both the?government?and the?FARC?named their negotiating teams. The agenda for talks [PDF?in Spanish] is to cover three thematic issues and three logistical issues, in this order:

RELATED: Think you know Latin America? Take our geography quiz!

  • Rural development policy (including land tenure)
  • Political participation (including the FARC?s possible political future)
  • Ending the conflict (including a cease-fire, demobilization, and paramilitarism)
  • Solving the illicit drug problem (including alternative development)
  • Victims
  • Implementation and verification

In WOLA?s view,?there are several reasons to be more optimistic about this peace process than about past attempts.

Reasons for optimism

1. The state of the conflict.?In the 10 years since the last peace talks failed, Colombia?s security forces grew by about two-thirds, about 23,000 people died in combat alone, and the FARC has been weakened. The group has shrunk in size by about half, and has lost several of its most senior leaders. Ten years ago, the FARC may have felt some momentum; today it must not. However, the FARC?s ability to persist ? andevidence?that guerrilla actions have increased since 2008 ? make clear that Colombia?s conflict is nowhere near ending on the battlefield. The ?home stretch? remains far off. For both sides, the cost of negotiating may appear to be lower than the cost of continued fighting.

2. The FARC appears more flexible.?Most of the guerrilla leaders who managed the FARC?s intransigent positions during the failed 1998?2002 peace process have been killed or captured. The new leadership appears somewhat more pragmatic. The guerrillas have abandoned a longstanding demand (which was met during failed 1998?2002 talks) that talks occur on Colombian soil, in a territory free of military presence. Talks will instead take place in other countries. The agenda indicates that the guerrillas are willing to contemplate disarming after an accord is reached; in earlier processes they had declared their intention to keep their weapons. The FARC?pledged?in February (though without verification of compliance) that it would halt the practice of kidnapping civilians for ransom, and publicly?expressed?willingness to negotiate even after its top leader was killed in late 2011.

3. The Colombian government appears more flexible.?President ?lvaro Uribe (2002?2010) was an outspoken critic of Colombia?s failed 1998?2002 peace talks, rode a wave of anti-negotiation sentiment into office, and consistently preferred fighting to dialogue. Despite the current correlation of forces, talks would be very unlikely today if Uribe or a similar hard-line figure were now in office. President Santos, though by no means a progressive or populist leader, is much more of a pragmatist, and is seizing the present opportunity to negotiate despite his predecessor?s?vocal opposition.

4. The negotiating teams are made up of ?heavyweights? representing sectors that might seem to be least disposed to seek peace.?This is especially true on the Colombian government side. In addition to top advisors and a former vice-president, President Santos?s negotiating team includes a prominent business leader, a former armed-forces chief, and a former police chief. The teams are not diverse ? neither side?s principal negotiators include even one woman, afro-Colombian or indigenous person, civil society leader, or conflict victim. But their proximity to Colombia?s power centers may make it easier from them to convince their respective sectors to agree to sacrifices and compromises at the negotiating table.

5. There will be international mediation.?During the failed 1998?2002 peace process, nearly all dialogues took place with only guerrilla and government representatives in the room. This time, a third party ? namely, diplomats from Norway and Cuba ? will be present, and will be able to keep conversations within the confines of the agenda and prevent them from getting derailed.

These advantages are new, and give us cause for hope. But the timeframe for these talks will still be long, and patience ? especially within Colombian public opinion ? may quickly wear thin.?

Factors that could trip up talks

1. Negotiating without a cease-fire.?President Santos backed off a?declared?pre-condition for talks with the FARC: that the group first engage in a cessation of hostilities. Instead, this theme does not arise until the talks reach the third point on the agenda. This could mean that, as the negotiators engage in talks, Colombia will continue to suffer combat, attacks on military, police, and civilian targets, landmines, recruitment of minors, sabotage of infrastructure, and similar events. To the extent that they continue ? or even intensify, as both sides seek advantage at the table by seeking it on the battlefield ? these hostilities will erode Colombian patience for the talks, give fuel to critics of the process, and constrain the Santos government?s range of action.

On Sept. 6, FARC leaders said that they would propose a bilateral cease-fire when talks begin in Oslo in October. We hope that they do, and that the Colombian government accepts. As long as such a cease-fire is generally observed, the resulting drop in violence would greatly increase support for the talks within Colombia, thus giving the Santos government ? which is taking a big political gamble ? much more room for maneuver. However, should cease-fire violations occur, they must not distract or disrupt the ongoing negotiations unless they are systematic and egregious.

2. Spoilers.?As failed past dialogues have shown, powerful Colombians who oppose the talks can derail them with violence. Those who attacked the FARC-tied Patriotic Union political party in the 1980s, and the paramilitaries who intensified their terror campaign during 1998?2002, did grave damage to earlier talks. In those cases, Colombia?s state did little to stop the ?spoilers.? That was a grave error, which must not be repeated now.

3. The FARC?s ability to ?deliver? the entire group.?As an old, far-flung organization whose communications have been badly disrupted, the FARC may not be as monolithic as it once was. Should the group demobilize in the future, a likely scenario could involve many younger, mid-level members, and the units they command, refusing to participate. This would especially be the case for units currently reaping profits from activities like drug trafficking or illegal mining. These un-demobilized FARC structures could remain at large like the paramilitary successors ? the ?criminal bands? or ?BACRIM? ? responsible for much violence in Colombia today. The number of such rogue units must be minimized if the process is to succeed.

4. Justice for crimes against humanity, and their victims.?A constitutional reform [page 30 of?this document] would make possible the demobilization of armed-group members in a future peace process. The ?Peace Framework Law? is controversial, though, because it could result in virtual amnesty for all but those ?maximally responsible? for crimes against humanity. However Colombia, as a signatory to the 1998 Rome Statute, cannot amnesty serious human rights crimes. Some sort of trial and/or alternative punishment regime must apply to the FARC?s most notoriously abusive leaders ? but if this arrangement is too stringent, these leaders will prefer to keep fighting. Colombia must find a way out of this conundrum that respects the rights of the FARC?s many victims.

5. People affected by an accord, but excluded from the talks.?What gets decided at the negotiating table could affect millions of Colombians, among them conflict victims, laborers, farmers, human rights defenders, women, displaced people, afro-Colombians, and indigenous people. Yet it is unlikely that these sectors will feel represented by the current negotiating teams. The legitimacy of the process will require that these affected parties have a real opportunity to offer meaningful input, and that they feel they were properly consulted. The mechanism for doing this could take many forms; one immediate step would be for Colombia?s government to revive the?National Peace Council, a multi-sector advisory body that, according to law, is supposed to meet every two months but has been?moribund.

6. The United States.?It would be hard to bring these talks to fruition in the face of determined opposition from the United States. Enthusiasm in Washington may be dampened by the FARC?s presence on the State Department?s?Foreign Terrorist Organizations list?and the active role that Cuba and Venezuela are playing. But the United States should neither oppose nor distance itself from this process. It is encouraging, then, that the White House quickly issued a?statement?in support of the talks. WOLA asks that the Obama administration continue to stand ready to support the process in any way that the Santos government finds advisable. Such support may include contributing conflict resolution or other expertise, playing good offices or similar diplomatic roles, or even being open to shifts in assistance that might result from an accord, such as less forced eradication and more rural development assistance.

Killing Them Softly Pushed Back

The Weinstein Company has pushed back the release of director Andrew Dominik?s (The Assassination of Jesse James) crime drama Killing Them Softly yet again.? After previously being moved from September to October in order to swap with TWC?s The Master, the film has now been pushed to November 30th so that it may be better positioned for awards season.? Harvey Weinstein noted the attractiveness of the spot given that the Brad Pitt-starrer could open as the only major wide release that weekend, with the iffy John Cusack/Nicolas Cage serial killer drama The Frozen Ground its only real competition.

The Weinstein Company has a number of major players in the awards race this year?including The Master, Silver Linings Playbook, and Django Unchained?and it?ll be interesting to see how they play their cards.? Killing Them Softly premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to an extremely positive response, with many noting the film?s strong political undertones and dialogue-driven narrative, so the film could be a major player in the Oscar race.? Hit the jump to watch the pic?s trailer.?

Here?s the official synopsis for?Killing Them Softly:

Three dumb guys who think they?re smart rob a Mob protected card game, causing the local criminal economy to collapse. Brad Pitt plays the enforcer hired to track them down and restore order. KILLING THEM SOFTLY also features Richard Jenkins (THE VISITOR), James Gandolfini (?The Sopranos?), Ray Liotta (NARC), Scoot McNairy (MONSTERS), Ben Mendelsohn (ANIMAL KINGDOM), and Vincent Curatola (?The Sopranos?). Max Casella, Trevor Long, Slaine and Sam Shepard also make appearances. KILLING THEM SOFTLY is written for the screen and directed by Andrew Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford), and is based on the George V. Higgins novel, ?Cogan?s Trade.? Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Steve Schwartz, Paula Mae Schwartz, and Anthony Katagas produced the film, with Roger Schwartz, Matthew Budman, Will French, and Douglas Saylor Jr. serving as co-producers. Director of photography Greig Fraser, and production and costume designer Patricia Norris led the creative behind-the-camera team. Casting for KILLING THEM SOFTLY was handled by Francine Maisler, and Brian A. Kates, A.C.E., served as editor. Executive producers are Megan Ellison, Marc Butan, Bill Johnson, Jim Seibel, Bob Weinstein, Harvey Weinstein, Adi Shankar and Spencer Silna.

DeMarco: No quick fix for these Red Sox

Payroll flexibility is nice, but Boston won't contend until at least 2014

Dustin Pedroia and the Red Sox won't have an easy road back into relevance.

ASK THE MLB EXPERT

Tony DeMarco

Baseball Expert Tony DeMarco has been covering the big leagues since 1987, and been casting Hall of Fame ballots for the last 15 years. He answers questions weekly here:

Q: The Red Sox now have payroll flexibility, but it looks like their competitiveness has been damaged. Realistically, how long will it take for the team to become a powerhouse again?
? Art Shannon, Coronado, Calif.

A: It's been a disastrous season in Boston to say the least, and the Red Sox are looking at their first last-place finish in 20 years, and only the second since 1932. Not to mention the game's worst wins/payroll ratio, as they had a $175-million payroll before the big deal with the Dodgers.

What's clear now is that everything 'Theo' is being dumped, and it's Ben Cherington's team now. That probably doesn't bode well for Bobby Valentine, either. But no matter who's managing in 2013, the Red Sox will look much different.

They'll have to make decisions on David Ortiz and Jacoby Ellsbury, both eligible for free agency, and at this point, you have to think they'll bring them back. But that won't be the case with Daisuke Matsuzaka and James Loney, two more free-agents-to-be.

In fact, the rest of this season is in effect a tryout for much of the roster besides the obvious key regulars, led by Dustin Pedroia and injured Will Middlebrooks. Is Jose Iglesias the shortstop of the future, for instance?

Jon Lester, Clay Buchholz and likely John Lackey will be back in the rotation, but at least several spots on the pitching staff also are in question for 2013.

The good news is that with about $250 million freed up in the Dodgers' deal, the Red Sox can maneuver in the off-season. This, however, is not a great winter for free agents beyond Josh Hamilton (if he reaches free agency).

Most likely, this is not a one-year fix, and so Cherington's focus should be on a return to prominence that has the capability to last a few years. I'd say 2014 at the earliest for the Red Sox being a legitimate postseason threat.

Q: Who do you like for the National League Rookie of the Year Award? Could you have a little love for the Cardinals' Matt Carpenter?
? Stephen Shoemaker, Tulsa

A: It's a duel down the stretch between Cincinnati's Todd Frazier and Washington's Bryce Harper, with Arizona's Wade Miley lurking ? making this yet another season that convinces me there should be Rookie hitter of the year and Rookie pitcher of the year awards in each league.

Frazier and Harper each had 18 homers through Monday, and both have been very versatile defensively, playing multiple positions on likely division winners. Frazier has solid advantages in RBI, batting average, slugging percentage and OPS; Harper in runs scored and stolen bases.

Miley clearly has been the league's best rookie pitcher, going 15-9 with a 3.07 ERA and 163 hits allowed in 170 innings, pitching half the time in hitter-friendly Chase Field. In some order, those three likely will be on most ballots.

Other notables include the Cubs' Anthony Rizzo, who's finishing strong; Milwaukee's Michael Fiers, who has slid under the radar at 9-7-3.05; Frazier's teammate Zack Cozart, and Colorado's Wilin Rosario. But in the latter case, his defensive struggles finally have come to national attention with a recent benching as his passed ball total rose to an alarming 18. This has been going on all season, but the breaking point finally was reached with a four-passed-ball game in Philadelphia over the weekend.

Carpenter has made a nice contribution to the Cardinals' league-leading offense, hitting just over .300 ? the highest by an NL rookie ? in part-time duty. But given the rest of the field, he isn't likely to get any top-three votes.

And while we're on the subject, how about the AL field ? one of the best in memory: League MVP candidate Mike Trout, Oakland's Yoenis Cespedes (as well as Jarrod Parker, Ryan Cook and Tommy Milone), Texas' Yu Darvish, Tampa's Matt Moore, Seattle's Jesus Montero, Boston's Will Middlebrooks and Baltimore's Wei-Yin Chen.

Q: The St. Louis Cardinals presently have five .300 hitters in their lineup. Have there been teams at the end of a season with more .300 hitters?
? Larry Gyuricza, Palatine, Ill.

A: Multiple .300 hitters in a lineup was a very common occurrence in the game's slugging era of the late 1920s-1930s. In fact, according to Baseball-Reference.com, a total of 26 teams had as many as six .300 hitters in a season between the 1920 and 1938 seasons.

Four teams in the 1920s had seven .300 hitters, and the 1930 St. Louis Cardinals had all eight regulars hit at least .300 and batted .314 as a team on their way to an NL pennant. (Alas, they lost the World Series to the Philadelphia A's).

Moving to more-modern times, the Steroids Era of the late-1980s to early-2000s also saw a proliferation of lineups with multiple .300 hitters. But the only team with six .300 hitters in the same lineup ? all of whom with enough plate appearance to qualify for the batting title ? was the 1995 Cleveland Indians:

DH Eddie Murray, LF Albert Belle, 2B Carlos Baerga, 3B Jim Thome, CF Kenny Lofton and RF Manny Ramirez. Sandy Alomar Jr. also hit exactly .300 in 218 plate appearances, as he platooned behind the plate with Tony Pena.

Three teams in the late-1990s had five .300 hitters in their lineup, including one I covered as a beat writer ? the 1996 Colorado Rockies. Given the asterisk of playing in pre-humidor Coors Field, they also amassed 221 homers and 201 stolen bases. The five .300-plus hitters were Ellis Burks, Eric Young, Dante Bichette, Andres Galarraga and Vinny Castilla.

The 1997 Red Sox (Nomar Garciaparra, Mo Vaughn, John Valentin, Troy O'Leary, Reggie Jefferson) and 1999 Mets (Edgardo Alfonzo, Mike Piazza, Rickey Henderson, Robin Ventura, Roger Cedeno) also had five.

So did the 1976 Big Red Machine (George Foster, Joe Morgan, Pete Rose, Ken Griffey Sr., Cesar Geronimo).

When It Comes To Buying Organic, Science And Beliefs Don't Always Mesh

We heard from a lot of you ? and we mean a lot of you ? about our recent report on the Stanford School of Medicine analysis of several studies on the health effects of organic foods.

The upshot of the Stanford review, as we reported, was that the scientists found very little evidence of health benefits. As we explained, the limitation of the review is that many of the studies included were narrowly targeted and that they didn't last longer than a couple of years. Basically, more studies are needed to determine whether there are measurable health benefits from eating organically grown food.

But many of you wrote in to us and to Morning Edition to let us know you weren't happy with the study or our coverage of it. What about environmental benefits? you asked. How could pesticide residues on conventionally grown food not be bad for us? What about genetically modified food? And, aren't you just shilling for the big food companies?

Listen to the radio piece this morning as correspondent Allison Aubrey addresses some of those questions, and our brain & behavior science correspondent, Shankar Vendantam, provides some possible explanations for why people react so strongly when it comes to questions raised about organic food. Hint: There are a variety of motivations for buying organic, many of which have to do with personal values and perceptions, rather than scientific reasons, Vendantam explains.

Rest assured, this isn't the last word on organics, either from us or from science.
