Assistant Executive Director - HigherEdJobs

The Assistant Director will be responsible for all legal matters related to the representation of 1500+ clinical and research faculty at the
University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. The individual will advocate for and build strong relationships with faculty,
librarians, and University personnel and will serve as liaison for faculty and librarians. Direct involvement and responsibility for
negotiation, administration, and enforcement of the collective bargaining agreement.

KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Participate in collective bargaining negotiations.
  2. Day-to-day administration/enforcement of collective bargaining agreement.
  3. Monitor UMDNJ compliance with AAUP National Standards.
  4. Advise faculty on issues related to the terms and conditions of their employment.
  5. Develop relationships and trust with faculty and University administration.
  6. Recruitment of full AAUP bargaining unit members.
  7. Supervise and Assign work to Office Staff.
  8. Promote active and broad participation by AAUP members in all areas of the organization's work.
  9. Draft and review legal documents (grievances, PERC complaints, and settlement agreements).
  10. Schedule, process, handle, and present arbitrations. Work with outside counsel as necessary.
  11. Work proactively to resolve issues (i.e. grievances) through mediation and negotiation.
  12. Interact with faculty organizations in support of shared-governance.
  13. Draft faculty communications & hold meetings and presentations on issues relating to faculty terms and conditions of employment.
  14. Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in higher education and monitor legislation that impacts upon faculty and librarian terms and conditions of employment.
  15. Assist AAUP Executive Director in preparing annual budget; involvement in personnel hiring process; supervising AAUP Staff; and maintaining sound financial practices for RWJMS/SPH/SOM Chapter.
  16. Other projects as assigned by the Executive Director.
Qualifications
  1. 5-8 years of experience in human resources with an emphasis on labor relations in higher education and a demonstrated ability to work with professional groups and individuals.
  2. Juris Doctorate with License to practice law in New Jersey or comparable experience as a faculty member.
  3. Must possess excellent analytic skills, strong writing and research skills, enthusiasm and initiative.
  4. Must possess an understanding of a variety of HR issues with a tactical, hands-on approach.
  5. Demonstrated skill in organizing membership development activities.
  6. Ability to work independently.
  7. Superior written and oral communication skills and computer proficiency.
  8. Comprehensive knowledge of federal and state public sector employment and labor laws.
  9. Management-side experience is a plus.
The position will be based in New Brunswick and will require some travel to Newark, NJ and Stratford, NJ.
