UR president getting National Humanities Medal

RICHMOND, Virginia ? University of Richmond President Edward L. Ayers is being awarded a National Humanities Medal.

Ayers is set to receive the honor from President Barack Obama at a ceremony Wednesday in Washington. He is among 12 people to receive the recognition.

The White House says Ayers will be recognized "for his commitment to making our history as widely available and accessible as possible."

Officials say Ayers' innovations in digital humanities extend higher learning beyond campus boundaries and allow broad audiences to discover the past in new ways.

The humanities medal recognizes those whose work deepens the nation's understanding of history, literature, philosophy and related disciplines.

Besides his presidency at Richmond, Ayers is a professor of history and is recognized as one of the top Civil War historians in the U.S.
