Baseball team collecting balls, gloves for soldiers

LAWRENCEVILLE -- The Gwinnett Braves want your baseball or glove.

The local minor league team is holding a drive to collect new or used baseball gloves at Coolray Field, as part of the Gloves 4 Troops program, hoping to send 1,000 gloves to U.S. troops before the start of spring training.

With the program already collecting more than700 gloves through its website, gloves4troops.com, the G-Braves hope the local collection can help the organization exceed its goal.

Gloves, as well as baseballs, can be donated at the Lawrenceville stadium until Feb. 22. Small donations will be accepted at the box office, while larger donations can be set up by calling Shari Massengill at 678-277-0311. Monetary donations will also be accepted.

Minor league infielder Vance Albitz of the St. Louis Cardinals organization set up the charity. He sends boxes of baseballs and gloves to troops stationed around the world, including in places like Afghanistan, a press release said.

For more information on how you can get involved with Gloves 4 Troops, visit gloves4troops.com or email Albitz at vance@gloves4troops.com.
