5 Easy Ways to Eat Healthy at a Cookout - BodiMojo

It?s really easy to go to a party intending to stick to your healthy intentions but forgetting about eating healthy when you see your mom?s famous blueberry pie. And of course you need whip cream on top and ice cream later! Summer is a time for cookouts, parties, car trips and days at the beach and all of these fun adventures usually come stocked with greasy food and high calorie snacks.

Here are a few easy steps to take to stay healthy at a cookout or party without depriving yourself:

1. Don?t ?save? up your meals for the day.

I know it can be tempting to go hungry all day so you can eat more at a party but honestly this plan never works. By starving yourself all day you?ll be slowing down your metabolism because your body will think you are literally starving.

If you know you have a party at night eat healthy and filling foods leading up to it. I always recommend having a little snack before getting ready to ensure that you do not beeline to the dessert table and can actually enjoy yourself and your company. Some suggestions: an apple with peanut butter, carrot sticks, cup of berries, or veggies with hummus.

2. Pick your indulgence.

Is there something you have really been looking forward to eating and enjoying? Well by all means, go for it! Stick to one serving size of that particular dish and enjoy it fully. Food is meant to be enjoyed not rushed through. When you slow down and actually enjoy your favorite desserts and snacks you?ll not only fully appreciate them but you?re body will have time to realize that it?s full and stop you from eating too much.

3. Fill up on the healthy choices?

After your indulgence move on to some of the healthier options to fully fill you up ? like grilled veggies, salad, watermelon and other types of fruit. I like to have what I?ve really wanted first so I?m not mindlessly eating the fruits and veggies in anticipation for my indulgence. Instead, I enjoy the fruits and veggies even more after I?ve satisfied my craving.

4. Watch the drinks & ?picky? food

Lemonade and iced tea can have a lot of added sugar. Instead stick to water with lemon or orange slices for a refreshing summer drink that will keep you hydrated without all the sugar. Another thing that is always at a cookout is lots and lots of snacks. You know, the food where you can just pick at it while you talk and not realize that you?ve had 30 chips. It?s so easy to mindlessly eat but see if you can step away from the bowl and fully enjoy a friend or family members conversation.

If you really want chips take a small handful on a plate and walk away from the buffet table. Don?t stand next to it and let yourself inhale an entire bag.

5. Enjoy the event not just the food

Realize food is meant to nourish you. Be present when you are eating and chew slowly. Most importantly, enjoy your company and have fun!
