Virginia Tech running back David Wilson will forego his senior season and enter the NFL draft. He made the announcement today during a press conference at Lane Stadium.?

Wilson was dressed sharply, with a shirt and tie and black suede jacket, and read his statement off an iPad.?

?I?ve played many Fridays. I?ve played many Saturdays. And now I would like to forgo my last year of eligibility to go play on Sundays,? Wilson said. ?I can?t give enough thanks to the people who positioned me to where I am today, especially those guys that took the field with me each week.??

Wilson was joined on a stage by his parents, Dwight and Shelia Wilson, and Tech coaches Frank Beamer, Shane Beamer, Bryan Stinespring and Billy Hite.?

He thanked the coaches for their support, saying, ?I love y?all. I thank y?all for giving a kid from Danville a chance. I really mean it and I can?t thank you enough. I love Virginia Tech. I love my team. I love Hokie nation. I hope I will be remembered and y?all support me as I move on to better my life and turn a dream into a destination.??

Wilson said he was leaning toward leaving for a while, but he didn?t make his final decision until Thursday.

He received a second-round grade from the NFL?s draft advisory board, but he feels like he can ace pre-draft workouts and work his way up into the first round.?

Wilson is actually projected as a first-round pick, No. 23 overall, by ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay. McShay has him ranked as the second best running back behind Alabama?s Trent Richardson. NFL.com lists Wilson as the No. 2 draft-eligible back behind Richardson.?

Wilson rushed for a school-record 1,709 yards this season. He is only the third back in ACC history to rush for at least 1,700 yards, joining UVa?s Thomas Jones (1,798 in 1999) and UNC?s Don McCauley (1,720 in 1970).?

Wilson, who earned second-team All-American honors this season, was also an All-American for Tech?s track team. He became the first Hokies athlete to earn All-America honors in two separate sports.?

Members of the track team watched the press conference from the back of the room. Assistant track coach Charles Foster spoke up near the end to wish Wilson the best.?

?You were an All-American with us before you were an All-American with them,? he said.
