As part of the digestive system, the colon and rectum participate in the process of converting food into the energy used to power bodily functions. The colon, also commonly known as the large intestine, is responsible for the absorption of excess water and some vitamins from waste as it passes through. Colorectal cancer occurs when the cells comprising these tissues proliferate out of control and threaten the health of the rest of the body.
According to the American Cancer Society, the vast majority of colorectal cancers develop from structures known as polyps. Polyps are small growths that can develop on the inside of the colon or rectum and can be either raised or flat in appearance. Although many polyps are benign, or non-cancerous, some can develop into colorectal cancer. Anyone can develop colon polyps, but some factors can put you at higher risk. You may have an increased risk of colon polyps if you:
- Are 50 years of age or older
- Have developed colon polyps in the past
- Are closely related to someone who has had polyps or colon cancer
- Have been diagnosed with uterine or ovarian cancer in the past
- Drink to excess, are overweight, smoke, or eat a lot of fatty foods (especially animal fats)
One of the most effective ways to detect colon polyps and evaluate them for cancer is to undergo regular colonoscopies. If polyps are found during this exam, the physician can remove them for biopsy. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that men and women begin screening for colorectal cancer at 50 years of age and continue until the age of 75.
