Four alleged members of the hacking group LulzSec and one Anonymous hacker are facing criminal charges in the US after their leader, Sabu, was turned by the FBI. Sabu, whose real name is Hector Xavier Monsegur, appears to have cooperated with the FBI to help gather evidence against his fellow hackers. Monsegur himself also pled guilty to computer hacking and other crimes on 15 August last year, according to court documents released today.
Other court documents unsealed today in US District court in New York reveal charges against alleged LulzSec members Ryan Ackroyd, aka "Kayla" and Jake Davis, aka "Topiary," both of London; and Darren Martyn, aka "pwnsauce" and Donncha O'Cearrbhail, aka "palladium," both of Ireland. The FBI claims that O'Cearrbhail is also responsible for eavesdropping on a phone call between the FBI and Scotland Yard, a recording of which was subsequently posted to the internet.
Jeremy Hammond, aka "Anarchaos," of Chicago is also named in the court documents as a member of Anonymous. The FBI says Hammond is the hacker who stole millions of emails from US security firm Stratfor in December, which WikiLeaks published last month.
Monsegur and other members of Anonymous have also taken responsibility for the denial of service attacks directed against the websites of Visa, MasterCard, and PayPal in December 2010, after those companies refused to process donations to WikiLeaks.
As recently as yesterday Sabu railed against "feds" and informants on Twitter. He now faces a maximum sentence of 124 years and six months in prison.
