The Ridgeway Reads Literary Society is inviting the public to their spring reading series featuring various and acclaimed authors.
The Friday night author series is held Friday evenings at Ridgeway-Crystal Beach High School?s auditorium at 6 p.m. The spring series will run until June 2.
This Friday the group welcomes author Hugh Brewster who will be discussing his recent book RMS Titanic: Gilded Lives on a Fatal Voyage. This is the 101st anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic and Brewster?s book tells the tale of real people who survived the event, including Madeline Mann who lived in Rideway and is buried there.
Brewster?s presentation will include artifacts and each person who arrives will receive a boarding pass like the voyagers of the ship did.
Mary Friesen, chairwoman of RRLS says people should come out for the history.
?These are actual biographies of people who experienced the event.?
A scaled-down version of some of the extravagance on the Titanic, champagne and refreshments will be available and attendees can dance to waltz or ragtime ? the same music played on the ship. Friesen says it is a great way to start the weekend.
?The event is for everyone. People who are voracious readers, people who want to read more or for people who are interested in the subject and do not have time to read a book.?
The next Friday, RRLS will welcome the Toronto Star?s environmental reporter, Tyler Hamilton to kick off Earth Week on April 22 to discuss alternate energy options and his book Mad Like Tesla: Underdog Inventors and their Relentless Pursuit of Clean Energy.
RRLS also tie in mutual support with local art, dance, music and theatre groups. Friesen says literature is just another aspect of the arts community and they are bringing in a large literary presence to South Niagara.
