Parents on chemicals: Does convenience trump concern?

?As a child,? Richard Carriero says, ?I was oblivious.?

He did all the ?dangerous? things as a kid: drank from the garden hose, ate junky processed treats and played with any plastic toy put in front of him.

?I didn't know any better and neither did my parents,? Carriero, 33, says.

But Carriero later learned about chemicals?especially Bisphenol A, better known as BPA, a compound used in plastics that some say causes health problems?and horror stories about Superfund sites like the one in Love Canal in Niagara Falls, N.Y. As an adult, Carriero says he sees the world with increasing suspicion: ?Power lines, tap water, aluminum cans and Styrofoam all became sources of danger.?

Now Carriero and his wife, Carrie, are expecting their first child. Before that, he says, their conversion to a less-chemical-laden and natural lifestyle started when Carrie was diagnosed with a benign tumor last year.

Cancer threatened, so their lives changed. Now organic-food converts, they shop exclusively at Whole Foods and farmers markets in their hometown of Boulder, Colo. A local dairy delivers their milk.

?As our baby grows, he or she will develop the disagreeable habit of putting everything in his or her mouth,? he says. They will limit exposure to plastics. Organic fibers will replace synthetics in clothing and bedding. ?We're even looking into cloth diapers, though we're not sure whether or not we have the courage.?

Carriero is one of many parents (or, in his case, an expectant one) who wrote stories for Yahoo News of their super-vigilance in the face of a chemical-saturated life?one shared by billions and brought again to light today by a United Nations-sponsored report that found that man-made chemicals in everyday objects are likely the cause of some cancers, psychiatric disorders and birth defects.

Here are excerpts from a few first-person perspectives that parents wrote today:

Prudence, not fear, is key

The U.N. report is no shocker to Marilisa Sachteleben, a Michigan mom with 25 years? experience raising two girls and two boys.

?Am I paranoid and terrified by the findings? No,? Sachteleben, of Grand Haven, writes. ?We live in a chemical-drenched society. It would be impossible to avoid them all.?

Sachteleben, a special-needs teacher and health writer, has been following news about phthalate and BPA for years. Her children (now 24, 22, 20 and 14) were breastfed and never given bottles, and she avoided plastic teething rings. They did, however, use sipper cups, the oft-fingered villain in toddlers? plastic-filled world.

?I wish I'd realized how dangerous plastic was then,? she says. ?If I was parenting little ones now, I'd definitely look for products made without phthalates or BPA.?

Her avoidance of plastics continues today. She writes: ?To prevent ingestion, I've quit serving foods in plastic. I use fewer plastic disposables and opt for paper over plastic. I look for lunch containers that are BPA-free. I serve fewer foods from cans. I buy metal water bottles. On the rare occasions when we drink from plastic bottles, I don't refrigerate them. I microwave less and don't heat on Styrofoam or plastic. This helps prevent plastic chemicals from leaching into food or beverages.?

Chemicals are a concern, but convenience is still king

As a parent, Emily Harmon takes the good with the bad. Balancing chemicals and kids is no different.

The 34-year-old suburban Cincinnati mom of two?a boy, 6, and a girl, 2?says she worries about their social and intellectual development and their overall safety and well-being.

But she says she wants them ?to experience bumps and bruises, disappointment, failure, and the occasional cold. I'm a pretty laid-back mom when it comes to the health of my children.?

The U.N. report does make her more concerned, again flaming fears she and her husband have talked about for years: cancers, birth defects, fertility problems, autism and more.

?There must be a reason, in this modern era of medical science, for the marked increase [in problems],? she writes. Her family already avoids plastics, uses stainless steel water bottles and eats from non-plastic containers. Still, her daughter uses a sippy cup, her son plays with plastic toys and they eat on plastic plates.

?Will I change further with these new findings? Yes, when convenient,? Harmon says. ?I will look for food products packaged in glass containers and will avoid drinking from plastic, when convenient. I will look for an alternative to my daughter's plastic sippy cups and start utilizing ceramic plates for the kids. Will I do a total lifestyle change to avoid [everyday chemicals]? No. Do I hope the government investigates regulations to help everyone better avoid these toxins? Absolutely.?

Can?t always bet on organic

Chemicals are everywhere?even in remote Sterling, Alaska, with its population of 5,617.

?We found it impossible to avoid man-made chemicals,? Unwirklich Vin Zant, a 27-year-old mother of three boys, writes. ?Modern living just does not allow parents to [do] so. It's on and in our walls. It's in our food. It's in our clothes and mattresses. It's in our soap and shampoo. Heck, it's in our dirt.?

Vin Zant says she can?t imagine the toll chemicals have taken on her body. And she?s worried her sons?4, 2 and 4 months?will undoubtedly see more exposure.

So, even when she and her husband were childless, they started unburdening themselves of man-made compounds as much as possible. They grow their own food in greenhouses and in a heated in-house grow room. They read labels for concerns, eschewing products and food with additives and synthetics. They even researched the soil near potential houses, deciding to buy ?way out in the boonies where the footprint of humanity was smaller.?

?It's scary,? Vin Zant says. ?It really is scary to think that against one of the largest threats to our children outside of global warming and war, we have no adequate defense.?

She says her family doesn?t always bet on organic products really being free of chemicals, ?thanks to the trendiness of organics,? she says. So, even though it?s often expensive, they try to make as much of their own food and wares.

The worst thing?

?We begged for it,? she says. ?We begged for it with every new, shiny, and more convenient lifestyle we sought.?

Success In Home Based Business Is Simple With These Wonderful ...

Mistakes Are Costing You! Learn To Stop?Making ALL 189 Of Them!

Struggling With WordPress? 100+ Step-By-Step Videos Now Available!

Posted by Administrator on Feb 18, 2013 in Uncategorized | Comments Off

Are you thinking of starting a online business soon? You can enjoy your work and be in charge of your own time and money. It?s still a business. The way to eliminate most of the stress is through proper preparation.

Take time for yourself to avoid burnout. Sure, you want to make as much as you can within your home business, but that doesn?t mean you should be making yourself sick. You will need intervals of rest and recuperation to keep you on top of your business game.

Even though you are working for yourself, you need to set a schedule that you aren?t likely to stray from. Yes, you are working at home, but you still need to treat it like a real job with real clients.

TIP! The challenge of a home business can be rewarding. Find your niche and leverage off of this when you begin.

Working from home can cause you to become lazier than intended, so make sure that you get up and move around often in order to ensure that you remain healthy. You are the only one who can force yourself to be active, even when working! You can do squats or lift light weights while you work. You should also consider a quick jog or nice walk on break or lunch. Stay in shape to ensure your health doesn?t affect your business.

A good protective step you can take when establishing a home business enterprise is to rent a PO box and use it as your business address. Do not use your own home address on business websites. That protects your identity, and also your family?s identity.

If you own a online business, be sure to keep track of the miles you drive that are specifically business-related. This is a deductible if you keep records of why the mileage was related to business expenses.

TIP! Base your business on something in which you already have experience. Many people make the mistake of trying to learn about their home business as they go.

Try to offer incentives, which can build your credibility to your customers. This type of marketing is the best for any business type. Incentives tend to boost loyalty from existing clients.

Be capable of expanding your business with more than one product or one you can build on. Try to brainstorm about other products or services that you can offer. Consider affiliate programs, too.

Create a small office at home. It does not necessarily have to be a large office, but it should be neat and organized well. Your office needs to inspire you and enable you to operate as effectively as possible. Don?t worry about the size, you can make do with whatever space you have.

TIP! You can engage in personal appointments during the day if you schedule them in. Like you take days off in a normal job, that can be done during the day so long as you catch up on that time later.

Look for forums and discussion groups online. This will help you network in your industry and establish your product and name. There could be someone out there waiting for what you have to offer.

Having others talk to people about your business is a great way to advertise. When people learn about a business from friends or family, their inclination is to give that company their attention. This is much more effective than a flyer or brochure sitting on a counter.

Running a home business is a great way to spend more time with your child. You can work at home and take care of your kid while you earn money for your family.

TIP! Learn information about conversion rates and strategies, and use it with your business. It is necessary to understand the relationship between conversion and profitability.

Why should your customers buy your offerings? You need to make this clear! Most online business owners know how to explain what they sell and how their products work. They also need to be told ?why? they should buy it. What is the reason a customer should make a purchase? This message will close the deal and guarantee loyalty if it is delivered properly. Include your ?why? statement on your website, advertising and other communications for reinforcement.

Whether you?re working in an office or running your own home business, you should spend 20 percent of your time learning new things related to the business andand the remaining 80 percent should be spent running the business. The aim is to actually make a profit, so you need to do whatever it takes to generate income.

With helpful tips, such as what has been listed here, you will reap more rewards from your home business enterprise. You can run your business much more smoothly when you?re prepared. Here?s hoping that your home based business operates like a well-oiled (and profitable) machine.

TIP! Upon launching a business, it is wise to meet with a bank representative who is well-versed in accounting and finance matters that relate to business. He or she will help you with establishing a bank account for your business and buying some checks with the name on it.

Call for Social Media & Marketing Intern

18
Feb

The Head & The Hand PressCall for Social Media & Marketing Intern

The Head & The Hand Press

2031 Frankford Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19125

?

THE HEAD & THE HAND PRESS IS A CRAFT PUBLISHING COMPANY BASED IN PHILADELPHIA. We call it that because we consider writers to be artisans and we think that they should have control over the process of crafting a book?from the first word written on the page to the first book sold off the shelf. The Head & The Hand Press is inspired by the growing movement of artisans who are reviving Philadelphia?s fractured post-industrial landscape into a local network of quality craft manufacturing. With that same spirit, we hope to build a publishing company that can successfully market books while keeping the integrity of the work in the hands of the writer.

We?re in search for a Social Media & Marketing Intern to join our marketing team. If you?re interested in gaining experience in communications in an effort to advocate for the work of authors, this position is for you.

The position would involve a mix of public relations, social media, marketing and event planning. We would like someone who enjoys the field of communications and is comfortable writing and speaking.

Most importantly, we?re looking for an intern that has an appreciation for the book publishing industry and the vision of The Head & The Hand Press. The Head & The Hand Press believes in working with authors to craft a book with quality and authenticity. At our press, the marketing team helps document this craft along the way through: 1) blog posts on our Workshop Blog and 2) posts on Facebook and Twitter.

The position would help out our Social Media & Marketing Coordinator and our Marketing Director, and he or she would be responsible for the following:

  • Join the voice of The Head & The Hand. We?d like our intern to become comfortable with the language of The Head & The Hand Press and embody our unique tone and voice in all communications.
  • Assist with coordinating events for writers. Help pitch and coordinate events via telephone and email.
  • Contribute to social media content development, management and monitoring. Fully manage Pinterest and contribute to Instagram (@theheadandthehand) regularly. Also assist with creating posts for Facebook & Twitter and monitoring them daily.
  • Create and manage visual content for our website and social media networks. Help with taking Instagram pictures at our Workshop and all other events for social media networks and our website (Workshop Blog and Events pages).
  • Bonus: if you have skills in photography or graphic design, or if you just enjoy taking pictures. This would be a plus for us, but not necessary.

We?d like a 12-15 hour commitment per week for this position. The position is unpaid, but it offers first-hand experience in communications for a company with an outstanding team dedicated to quality work in the book publishing industry. To apply for this position, please send a resume and cover letter to: promotion@theheadandthehand.com.? Please feel free to email us at the same address if you have any questions. Thanks and we look forward to your applications.

Sports Saturday Roundup: NCAA Top 25 Basketball; Pro Scores; Golf

(AP) -- Indiana can expect to remain the top team when The Associated Press men's basketball poll comes out on Monday. However, second-ranked Duke will likely drop a couple of spots following an ACC road loss.
Seth Allen drained a pair of free throws with 2.8 seconds left to give Maryland an 83-81 win over the Blue Devils. Allen finished with 16 points and Alex Len added a team-high 19 as the Terrapins dropped Duke to 22-3.
Seth Curry paced the Blue Devils with 25 points and Quinn Cook finished with 18. Cook had a chance to be the hero, but he missed a three-pointer at the buzzer.
Earlier in Bloomington, Will Sheehey scored a career-high 22 points and set a team record by going 9-for-9 from the field in the Hoosiers 83-55 romp over Purdue. Cody Zeller finished with 19 points and nine rebounds, and Christian Watford scored 10 of his 14 points in the first five minutes.
The only blemish for the Hoosiers was an injury to Victor Oladipo (oh-lah-DEE'-poh), who sprained his ankle in the final minute of the first half and missed the rest of the game. It's unclear whether he'll play Tuesday at Michigan State.

In other top-25 action:
-- Kelly Olynyk had 26 points and nine rebounds as fifth-ranked Gonzaga finally won at San Francisco 71-61. Elias Harris added 17 points and 13 rebounds in the Bulldogs' first win at War Memorial Gymnasium in four years.
-- Brandon Triche (trihsh) contributed a career-high 29 points, six rebounds and five assists as No. 6 Syracuse beat Seton Hall 76-65 to keep its share of the Big East lead. C.J. Fair added 19 points and 11 rebounds to help the Orange bounce back from Tuesday's loss to Connecticut.
-- Seventh-ranked Florida rolled over Auburn, 83-52. Mike Rosario led the Gators' attack with 22 points while Kenny Boynton had 16. Florida has won its last three SEC games by an average of 24 points.
-- No. 8 Michigan State got by Nebraska 73-64 as Keith Appling chipped in 16 points for the Spartans to go over 1,000 for his career. Adreian Payne added 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Spartans, who still share the Big Ten lead with Indiana.
-- Shane Southwell scored all 18 of his points from beyond the arc as 10th-ranked Kansas State hammered Baylor 81-61. Angel Rodriguez scored 22 points, including a three-pointer that fueled a 13-2 run after the Bears got within 43-41.
-- No. 11 Butler beat Fordham 68-63 behind Rotnei Clarke's 22 points. The Rams led 35-30 until the Bulldogs went on a 16-2 run to go up 46-37 with under 13 minutes to play.
-- Jeff Withey's 15 points and 11 rebounds carried 14th-ranked Kansas to a 73-47 pounding of Texas.
-- Vander Blue scored 19 points to lead No. 18 Marquette to a 79-69 victory over 16th-ranked Pittsburgh. Blue was 7 of 8 from the field and 3 for 4 on free throws to go with six rebounds for the Golden Eagles, who moved into a first-place tie with Georgetown in the Big East. Marquette also won the teams' previous meeting this season, 74-67 in overtime at Pittsburgh on Jan. 20.
-- Marcus Smart scored 28 points, Le'Bryan Nash added a season-high 26 and No. 17 Oklahoma State beat Oklahoma 84-79 in overtime. Smart fed Nash for a right-handed slam with 53 seconds left in overtime to put the Cowboys up for good, 80-79.
-- No. 19 New Mexico closed on a 13-4 run to beat Boise State 60-50. Cameron Bairstow had 16 points and seven rebounds, while teammate Tony Snell added 12 points, six rebounds and four assists for the Lobos.
-- Kadeem Batts scored 20 points and Vincent Council had 11 assists to become Providence's career leader as the Friars beat No. 21 Notre Dame 71-54. Providence has won four straight, including a victory over then-No. 17 Cincinnati on Feb. 6. Council also had 11 rebounds and seven points.
-- Adonis Thomas scored a career-high 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as No. 22 Memphis beat Marshall 71-59, the Tigers' 16th consecutive win. The Tigers are 11-0 in Conference USA.
-- No. 23 Oregon beat Washington State 79-77 on E.J. Singler's two free throws with 3.8 seconds left in overtime. Singler had a team-high 25 points for the Ducks, who are 10-3 in the Pac 12 following their third straight win.
-- Dorian Green scored 22 points and No. 24 Colorado State picked up its sixth straight win by holding off Air Force 89-86. The Falcons lost despite Michael Lyons' career-high 45 points, the most by an Air Force player in a league game.
-- No. 25 Kentucky was crushed as Trae Golden had 24 points and eight assists in Tennessee's 88-58 romp over the Wildcats. The win is the most lopsided for the Volunteers over the Wildcats in the 216-game history of this series.

HOUSTON (AP) -- The NBA held its usual array of competitions on the eve of the All-Star game in Houston.
Toronto rookie Terrence Ross beat defending champion Jeremy Evans to win the slam-dunk contest. The 6-foot-6 Ross jumped over a ball boy, whipped the ball between his legs and threw down a one-handed slam to clinch the victory.
Cleveland point guard Kyrie Irving beat San Antonio's Matt Bonner to win the 3-point contest. Irving started 7 for 7 in the final round and finished with 23 points, two shy of the record shared by Craig Hodges and Jason Kapono
A team of Chris Bosh, Swin Cash and Dominique Wilkins won the Shooting Stars competition, beating the trio of Russell Westbrook, Maya Moore and Robert Horry. Portland rookie Damian Lillard beat Philadelphia guard Jrue Holiday in the final round to win the Skills Competition
NBA Commissioner David Stern held his final All-Star weekend news conference before retiring next February. He fielded numerous questions about the future of the Sacramento Kings but gave little insight into the situation.
A Seattle group has reached an agreement to buy the team from the Maloof family with the goal of moving it to the Northwest, and Sacramento's mayor is trying to keep the Kings in California's capital. Stern says owners will continue to discuss the plans and will hear from Mayor Kevin Johnson with the goal of deciding at their April board meeting.
Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver said next year's All-Star game likely will be played in New York, either at Madison Square Garden or the Barclay's Center.

NBA-UNION
Hunter ousted
HOUSTON (AP) -- Billy Hunter has been unanimously voted out as executive director of the NBA players' association. A possible change has been building since a review of the union last month was critical of Hunter's leadership and urged players to consider whether they wanted to keep him.
Hunter had led the union since 1996 and his attorneys have indicated there could be a legal challenge if he was removed.

Tavares tricks Devils...Tampa Bay comes back to beat Panthers
(AP) -- Anaheim goaltender Viktor Fasth continued his personal winning streak while the Anaheim Ducks inched closer to the Western Conference-leading Chicago Blackhawks
The 30-year-old Fasth stopped 32 shots and Corey Perry scored the deciding shootout goal as the Ducks won for the eighth time in their last nine games, topping Nashville 3-2. Fasth is 8-0 this year, with four victories coming in shootouts.
The Ducks trailed twice before moving within two points of the Blackhawks, who own the league's best record.

Also on ice, John Tavares registered his fourth career hat trick and had an assist in the New York Islanders' 5-1 win over New Jersey. Matt Moulson added a goal and three assists as the Islanders handed the Eastern Conference leaders just their second loss in seven games.
Ben Scrivens notched his first career shutout with a 34-save effort in Toronto's 3-0 win over Ottawa. Fraser McLaren, Tyler Bozak and John-Michael Liles scored for Toronto, which earned its fifth win in six games.
Montreal has a three-game winning streak after rookie Brendan Gallagher provided a goal and an assist in a 4-1 triumph over Philadelphia. Gallagher left four minutes into the third period and did not return after being hit into the boards by Luke Schenn.
Benoit Pouliot (BEHN'-wah POO'-lee-aht), scored 79 seconds into overtime as Tampa Bay beat Florida 6-5 to end a six-game losing streak. The Panthers were on the verge of a 5-4 win until Teddy Purcell (PUR'-sul) tallied with 11 seconds left in regulation.
Martin Hanzal scored twice and had an assist as Phoenix topped Columbus 5-3. Hanzal's first goal broke a 3-3 tie with 11:42 remaining, sending the Coyotes to their third win in four games.
Magnus Paajarvi (pah-YAHR'-vee) scored the tiebreaking goal with 1:34 remaining before Edmonton completed a 6-4 win over Colorado. The Avalanche led 4-1 until Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Ales Hemsky (AL'-ehsh HEHM'-skee) scored 59 seconds apart late in the second period.

NHL-RED WINGS
Franzen on ice
DETROIT (AP) -- The Detroit Red Wings have put forward Johan Franzen on injured reserve. Franzen has missed Detroit's last two games with a hip injury.

MLB-REDS
Reds and Bailey agree
GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) -- Pitcher Homer Bailey and the Cincinnati Reds have agreed to a $5.35 million, one-year contract, ensuring baseball will set a record low for arbitration hearings. No cases have been argued before three-person panels this year among the 133 players who filed for arbitration last month. Just two hearings remain scheduled for next week, San Diego left-hander Clayton Richard and Baltimore reliever Darren O'Day.
Baseball's previous record low was three hearings, set in 2005 and matched in 2009 and 2011. The high was 35 in 1986.
